I feel a sense of relief. Despite the fact that Maryland is playing the most hyped game between a DI-A and a DI-AA team in the history of college football, I awoke this morning with a sense that all was not right with the world. Now, I think we have a chance at happiness.
It all started about a week ago. Maryland alum and San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman had been subject to citizen’s arrest on September 6th after reportedly abusing girlfriend Tila Tequila, star of the reality TV show “A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila,” after a night of hard partying San Diego style. According to this KGTV report, things got ugly when Ms. Tequila discovered Mr. Merriman had been less than faithful in their relationship.
Upon hearing the initial reports, I went into a deep funk and began questioning everything. If Shawne and Tila couldn’t make it work, how could anyone? Is love dead? If love is dead, how can I go on living? The incident had me meditating on the Ratt song, “Lack of Communication”:
You’re so together, you fall apart
You never miss, when you’re shootin’ straight for the heart

You see it your way, I’ll see it mine
Well, conversation is a useless change of line

That’s so true. But wait, there’s good news! Love may not be lost after all. You see, I just read an AP report that the San Diego DA’s office has decided not to press charges against Merriman. I can only imagine that the DA must have had so many reliable first hand accounts of the incident that the only logical way to proceed was to determine that Merriman did not abuse Tequila, and that the rule of love trumps the rule of law. With the law out of the way, Merriman and Tequila are now free to reconcile. The world may yet see a Merriman-Tequila wedding, followed by beautiful little Shawnes and Tilas running around San Diego. If hope is a wish mixed with faith, then I’m hoping hard that this works out. Love is at stake.
Stay classy San Diego. We might see Merriman take another shot at love with Tila Tequilla yet.

If Merriman and Tequila got married it would really restore my faith in humanity.
